CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY

Waste Reduction, Recycling, and Resource Efficiency Initiatives

UTeM continues to strengthen its sustainable campus practices through waste reduction, recycling, reuse activities, and resource-efficiency programs. These initiatives are implemented with the involvement of staff, students, campus service providers, and external partners to support a cleaner and more responsible campus environment.

3R and Recycling Activities

3R and recycling activities encompass the collection and segregation of paper, boxes, cans, e-waste, plastics, fabrics, and used cooking oil—which can be converted into cash through the 'Trash to Cash' program—as well as the donation of clothing and bags that are still in good condition for reuse. These initiatives aim to reduce waste and the consumption of single-use plastics, alongside raising awareness regarding 3R practices and Act 672.

Resource Recovery and Innovation

Resource recovery and innovation initiatives include the refurbishment of electrical appliances to extend their lifespan and reduce e-waste, as well as the creation of furniture and souvenirs from plastic waste—an effort that includes providing machinery to the community of Kampung Bukit Pulau.

Collaboration with Partners

Collaboration between UTeM and AEON Melaka through a sustainability program that includes the production of candles from used cooking oil, HDPE products, and an exhibition on smart energy technology.

Community Awareness

The empowerment of the Kampung Bukit Pulau community is carried out through the development of skills in utilizing plastic waste to generate income, as well as the sharing of knowledge on sustainability and green technology—fostering connections between the university, industry, and the community.

Green Campus Culture

A green campus culture is fostered through 3R practices, waste segregation, energy conservation, the use of digital documents, and campaigns encouraging the use of personal food containers, tumblers, and reusable bags to reduce single-use plastics. Additionally, group activities and sustainability programs are implemented to enhance the knowledge and engagement of the UTeM community in environmental stewardship.
